I'm trying to install boinc on an old beat up laptop
I type in "sudo apt-get install boinc-client boinc-manager" I get any error saying "E: Unable to locate package boinc-client E: Unable to locate package boinc-manager" It worked on my other laptob running Ubuntu 12.10 Does anyone have any advice or suggestions on how to get it up and running? If it helps I am running ubuntu off a thumb drive as the laptop has no hard drive. I have done this before to run world community grid and it has worked hence more confusion for me. Does anyone have any advice or help? |

There's the hard way, if there's the easy way...
First do a sudo apt-get update so it can fetch the latest repository libraries. Second do a sudo apt-get install synaptic If it does install, fire up synaptic and type boinc into the search box, or load Ubuntu Software Centre, which is installed by default and search for boinc. |

And could you tell me which nvidia driver files I need to install using Synaptic.
I installed Mint 14 yesterday and can't get my GTX460 working on WCG wuutjes. If I fill in nvidia using Synaptic I see an awfull lot of files and I don't know which to install. Have installed 304.51 so it seems and boinc 7.0.27. Any help is welcome. |

You should look on the NVIDIA website to determine which driver your card needs. Also MINT has an "Additional driver" tool, that I have found more reliable than synaptic for installing graphic cards. You can find it here:- Menu > Applications > Preferances > Additional drivers You need to visit Nvidia first though, good luck     |

That's correct. The 12.10 Additional drivers will have the latest [highlighted with "recommended" or something of that wording], but careful there, they moved that into a tab of the software manager agent sometime from v 12.xx or so. There's no more stand alone "additional drivers", at least not in my Ubuntu 12.10 or the 13.04 nightly.

Additional drivers reports "The devide is using the recommended driver" but the problem I have is that boinc doesn't start GPU wuutjes so my card is doing totally nothing. Tried POEM, WCG and CC but nothing happens.
So I must do something wrong, haven't installed the right driver or something like that. |

Often the AD tab has 3 drivers listed, to include the latest that was ported to Linux. Next time I boot into Ubuntu nightly I see what it says for the ATI Radeon.

The AD tab lists 3 choices for drivers.
The first one is X.Org X server. That is the driver from Ubuntu. There is one that says "Using Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx (proprietary)". That is the generally available driver from AMD. There is one that says "Using Video driver for the AMD graphics accelerators from fglrx-updates (proprietary)". That is a beta driver from AMD. If you want to run GPU tasks you should choose either of the fglrx drivers depending on whether you want to run a generally available driver or a beta driver. I have two Linux rigs and am running the GA driver on one rig and the beta driver on the other rig. Hope that helps. |

For my GTX460 I need nvidia and it shows 8 choices.
*Nvidia binary Xorg driver, kernel module and VDPAU lib from nvidia current Using X.Org X server -- Nouveau display driver from xserver-org-video-nouveau (open source) And so on. Some show 313, 310 or 304 with or without propritary or experimental. As far as I know 310.32 is the latest certified driver from nvida so perhaps I should select that one. I'll wait till the queue is empty and than I install a newer version of Boinc and download install the latest nvidia driver and install it. |
